Penn State Schedules 2023 White Out Vs. Iowa

The Lions will host the Hawkeyes in a prime-time game on CBS.

Iowa returns to Beaver Stadium as Penn State's White Out opponent for the first time since 2009, as the Lions announced another prime-time game on the 2023 football schedule.

Penn State will host Iowa on Sept. 23 for the annual White Out game, which CBS will carry as part of its new media rights deal with the Big Ten. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET,  marking Penn State's second consecutive season with a CBS broadcast. Penn State's game at Auburn last year marked the team's first CBS appearance since 2011.

The White Out date was a significant question mark of Penn State's 2023 football schedule. Though it opens the season in prime time against West Virginia, Penn State did not schedule that game for the White Out. That left Iowa or Michigan (on Nov. 11) as the most likely opponents. But the Penn State-Michigan game, the biggest of the Lions' 2023 home schedule, appears earmarked for a FOX Big Noon broadcast.

Penn State hasn't hosted Iowa for a White Out game since 2009, when the Hawkeyes won 21-10. The teams last played in 2021, when the Penn State-Iowa rivalry reached a new pitch. Some Hawkeyes fans at Kinnick Stadium booed Penn State players they felt were faking injuries. Five Penn State players were injured in the game, including quarterback Sean Clifford and defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, who didn't play again that season.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said three days after the game that some fans "thought they smelled a rat,"which led to the booing. Penn State coach James Franklin responded by saying he didn't "think that's the right thing for college football."

Iowa has won the last two games in the series, including a 23-20 victory in 2021. Prior to that, Penn State had won six straight against the Hawkeyes, with Franklin's teams going 4-0. Penn State is 5-6 at home against Iowa since joining the Big Ten.

Penn State on Monday announced several other home promotions. Notably, the Lions will kick off NBC's prime-time Big Ten schedule Sept. 2 against West Virginia with the return of the stadium helmet stripe. And  Penn State's Nov. 11 game against Michigan marks the return of the Stripe Out. Homecoming is scheduled for the Oct. 14 game against Massachusetts, and Military Appreciation Day is scheduled for the Oct. 28 game against Indiana.
