PITTSBURGH -- When the Pitt Panthers travel to Morgantown, West Virginia to meet the Mountaineers for the next installment of a storied rivalry, they will do it without having to face one that program's most legendary head coach.

Bob Huggins, on the heels of an arrest in Pittsburgh on DUI charges over the weekend, has announced that he will resign from his post as head coach of West Virginia men's basketball effective immediately.

"My recent actions do not represent the values of the University or the leadership expected in this role," Huggins said in a statement. "While I have always tried to represent our University with honor, I have let all of you - and myself - down. I am solely responsible for my conduct and sincerely apologize to the University community - particularly to the student-athletes, coaches and staff in our program. I plan to spend the next few months focused on my health family so that I can be the person they deserve.

Huggins was found around 8:30 pm on Pittsburgh's North Shore Saturday night. He was blocking traffic in a black SUV with one of the side doors open and a flat tire that had been "shredded," according to a police report.

This is his second arrest on a DUI charge, with the first coming almost 19 years ago to the date in June of 2004.

Earlier this year, Huggins was punished by the university for using a homophobic slur during a live radio hit for a station in Cincinnati. He incurred a salary reduction, was compelled to donate to charities that benefit LGBTQ people and undergo sensitivity training in addition to a three-game suspension.

The Panthers are scheduled to play West Virginia on December 6 in Morgantown, West Virginia. Whether Huggins will be manning the sideline for that game remains to be seen.
