PITTSBURGH -- As former Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins throws and runs plays at Steelers rookie minicamp, he's surrounded by banners and signs celebrating the Pitt Panthers' major award winners and ACC Championship victory.

Surrounded by Pitt regalia, Perkins is trying to create a new home in enemy territory and he's still learning how it all works at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, which the Steelers and Panthers share.

I’m asking a lot of questions about how does the split work," Perkins said. "Like when do the Steelers come? When does Pitt come? Do you guys use the same training room? How does that work? I’m slowly getting up to speed on how everything works around here.”

This is just his second time in Pittsburgh but his first and only trip to the Steel City was a successful one. His Cavaliers kicked off a banner year - with a 30-14 win over Kenny Pickett and the Panthers in a primetime game at then-Heinz Field in 2019. The Panthers took a one-point lead at the tail end of the first half but Virginia scored all 17 second-half points to earn a convincing victory.

Perkins threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and added 44 yards on the ground in the winning effort. The Cavaliers went on to win nine games for the first time since 2007 and just the seventh time in program history, largely thanks to Perkins' arm and legs.

He'll try to channel some of that magic as he competes for a roster spot with Hunter Johnson and Tanner Morgan.
