Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks have made it known over the past few seasons that the program isn't afraid to utilize the transfer portal. While Beamer doesn't use the portal as his primary means to construct his roster, the third-year head man understands that transfers can help plug in holes on the roster that the staff can't solve through high school recruiting.

Everyone remembers Spencer Rattler from the Gamecocks' 2022 transfer portal haul, but there's seemingly been little discussion about the group reeled in for the 2023 cycle. When considering the players' overall talent and how they address a position of need, this is my objective ranking of the Top 5 portal additions for South Carolina this offseason.

1) TE Trey Knox

Knox was the easiest answer out of all the transfers that could've been a part of this ranking. Considering the fact that South Carolina lost their entire tight end room from the 2022 season, the tight end position was the most significant position of need heading into bowl practice.

Knox brings an abundance of SEC experience and leadership, and his combination of receiving skills and size makes him South Carolina's biggest red zone threat on offense in 2023.

2) WR Eddie Lewis

Lewis offers positional versatility in multiple aspects for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks as a guy who can play inside or outside receiver in Dowell Loggains offense and can be a home-run threat in the return game. Eddie also displayed his ability as a receiver who can consistently get open downfield in the Spring game due to his route-running skills combined with his release on the line.

With a lack of proven playmakers behind Antwane "Juice" Wells heading into the Fall, Lewis is a guy who's expected to be an immediate fixture in the receiver rotation in 2023.

3) TE Joshua Simon

Much like Knox, Simon helps the Gamecocks address the mass exodus they witnessed at the tight end position after the conclusion of the 2022 regular season. While not possessing the SEC experience of Knox, Simon separates himself from some of the other tight ends with his willingness to block as an H-back in conjunction with his responsibilities as a receiving tight end. This will automatically make him an essential part of Dowell Loggains' offensive plans in 2023.

Honorable Mention: EDGE Jatius Geer and RB Mario Anderson
