Pelicans Waive Veteran Garrett Temple
New Orleans, LA - The New Orleans Pelicans released veteran guard and Baton Rouge native Garrett Temple on Wednesday. The move comes before Temple's $5.4 million contract would be guaranteed on July 7. New Orleans previously extended the decision on Temple's contract from the end of June until the first week of July. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype was the first to report the news of Temple's release.
The 14-year veteran spent the last two seasons in New Orleans, appearing in 25 games this past year. Temple has appeared in 84 games, averaging 15 minutes and 4.3 points per contest. Once he clears waivers, Temple will be an unrestricted free agent.
The cost-cutting move for the Pelicans still leaves them slightly above the tax line heading into the 2023-2024 season. NBA teams are required to carry a minimum of 14 players on the roster. New Orleans currently has 13 signed. This could lead to Temple returning on a cheaper deal or having a two-way player elevated to the full-time roster.
New Orleans is gearing up for the start of the NBA Summer League play on July 7. The team held their first practice in preparation of the annual event in Las Vegas.
