Bengals Pass On Calijah Kancey For Bryan Bresee In Mel Kiper Jr.'s Latest ESPN Mock Draft

Cincinnati had its pick from two of the top defensive lineman in the class.

CINCINNATI — The Bengals passed up on a chance to draft Pittsburgh defensive tackle Calijah Kancey in Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest ESPN mock draft.

Cincinnati selected Clemson edge rusher Bryan Bresee at No. 28.

"We've focused a lot on the Bengals' need at tight end," Kiper Jr. wrote. "But what if they think they filled it with often-injured veteran Irv Smith Jr.? This is the direction they could go if that's the case. Cincinnati ranked 29th in sacks last season (30), and it needs to get more of an interior push on late downs. Bresee could provide that. At 6-foot-5, 298 pounds, he tested extremely well at the combine. He's powerful at the point of attack and is instinctual after the snap. This is another team without many holes, so it can afford to select a player who might not start immediately."

Bresee (No. 28 overall) and Kancey (No. 20) are right next to each other on the consensus big board, as Kancey went to the Saints with the next pick.

The sophomore out of Clemson posted 15 tackles (5.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, and 2 pass breakups last season.

"Bresee must refine his setup and counters for better pass rush sequencing," The Athletic's Dane Brugler wrote in "The Beast" this year. "But he is an explosive force player with disruptive potential in both even and odd fronts. His tag on draft boards will have a medical designation and his injury background might determine where he is drafted."

Bresee is Brugler's second-ranked defensive lineman behind Georgia's Jalen Carter.
