PFF Projects Joe Burrow's Contract Extension
CINCINNATI — PFF's Brad Spielberger unveiled his projections for upcoming quarterback extensions this week.
The NFL salary cap expert thinks Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will get a shorter deal at four years, $214 million with $185 guaranteed.
Spielberger doesn't expect any of the QBs to get fully guaranteed deals but get ready for a number closer to $60 million per year.
"If Burrow were to argue he should get the same percentage increase over Aaron Rodgers’ extension that Mahomes’ $39.55 million average represented over Wilson’s, that would equate to a deal worth nearly $57 million annually," Spielberger wrote. "However, Wilson’s 2020 extension was an incremental raise over the market, whereas Rodgers exerted maximum leverage coming off back-to-back MVP awards to jump way ahead of the market. As a result, we expect Burrow to top Rodgers, but not by as wide a margin."
Fellow cap expert Andre Perrota projected a deal twice as long earlier this offseason. Cincinnati would have more flexibility to work with Burrow's contract to build the roster this decade.
On the flip side, Burrow can make the most money in his career by taking this contract route.
The two sides have reportedly started talks already as the world awaits the next market-setting QB deal.
