Nick Scott Highlights Role On Bengals Defense
CINCINNATI — Nick Scott and Dax Hill figure to be the Bengals' new starting safety duo when the team lines things up in Week 1. Scott met with the media on Monday and dove into his role on defense.
"Being a guy that can kind of move around in the back," Scott said. "You know, have eyes on everything. You know, try to just read the quarterback and react and play like that. You know, be a guy that can make calls for the DBs and get everybody in the right positions."
The man feeding those calls in is the Mad Scientist, Lou Anarumo.
Scott is excited to work with a defensive coordinator who is not only a football savant, but a coach that can kick back and relax as well.
"Just like one his personality, he's a real cool guy," Scott said about Anarumo. "You know, sometimes kind of hard to find a balance of somebody who's cool guy, sociable, but also like a wizard in terms of football as I think some people put it, so you know, he's got a nice balance where he can hold a conversation doesn't always have to talk ball, but when he does start talking about it you really want to listen, to hone in, because he's got a lot of experience. And he clearly knows what he's doing."
The 27-year-old thinks this defense is a nice fit for his game.
"Not necessarily specific calls, but I kind of got an idea for the defense," Scott said about the Bengals system. "They got an ability to play single-high, split safety, all that stuff, and really the thing that was most impressive was just their ability to really hone in on their opponent and adjust where needed, which kind of affects the style of play week in and week out."
Scott has earned millions playing a position he didn't get recruited for at Penn State.
Head coach James Franklin and Scott decided to switch him from running back to safety ahead of the 2016 season once they saw what Saquon Barkley could do at that position.
A solid choice for everyone involved. Now, Scott is ready to keep sharpening his safety skills in a versatile defense.
"I just want to fit in wherever they see fit, how the coaches see fit," Scott declared. "The locker room sees fit, to contribute."
