Zac Taylor Highlights The Bengals Deep Roster: 'We Got Really Good Work In' During Minicamp
CINCINNATI — Bengals head coach Zac Taylor walked away from the 2023 minicamp impressed with his team's focus and depth as the summer break starts up.
Cincinnati has famously paired down its offseason to reduce injury risk but that's not making the players lazy in their own work.
"I think that we got really good work in," Taylor noted to the media on Thursday. "I think guys have an understanding of what we're all about here, you know, guys that are new to our program. The vets really hit the ground running this offseason, and I really enjoyed the urgency. You know, it wasn't the most physically taxing practices probably in the league right now, but it's because of the urgency these guys attack walkthroughs with and the individual drills, and so there's an appreciation from the coaching level.
"That aspect of how the guys approached it and prove that they can handle this type of workload. And so, we're coming into this thing, relatively healthy, and these guys can continue to build on the foundation that they've presented for themselves over these next five weeks, so that when training camp hits they're ready to hit the ground running."
Cincinnati is hoping to get all-clear signs for Jonah Williams and Chidobe Awuzie soon as Taylor noted they'll eventually fully return to the deepest roster he's coached in the Queen City.
"It's certainly the best we've had," Taylor said about the roster depth. "It's hard in pro football now to have as strong a 53-man roster that we can potentially have. I just think it is the way the salary cap's built and you get to acquire young players that step up quickly.
"And again, some of these guys still have a long ways to go to be the caliber player that we intend on them being, but I've been really excited just watching some of these position groups work and you just really kind of think through where the roster's at, the 90-man, and you want to really encourage from top to bottom. There's no players that don't belong here. You can oftentimes get an uneven roster. Everyone belongs here and has a role and I'm excited to watch all these guys compete in training camp."
Cincinnati kicks off the next phase of the offseason on July 26th. Oh, and Taylor gave his players a nice little goodbye reward meal on the way out.
