CINCINNATI — The Bengals re-signed Drew Sample to a one-year contract on Friday afternoon.

They took the 26-year-old in the second round (52nd overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Sample should be a nice compliment to Irv Smith Jr. Cincinnati added Smith last month. He's known for his pass catching skills and explosiveness.

Bringing back a familiar face like Sample makes sense for Cincinnati. He's a talented blocker, knows the offense and helps stabilize the position ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Adding Sample won't keep them from taking a top tight end in the draft like Dalton Kincaid or Michael Mayer, but if they don't get one of those guys, they should be fine with Sample, Smith and Devin Asiasi already on the roster.

Sample has 58 career receptions for 458 yards and one touchdown in 44 career games.
