Browns GM Andrew Berry Expects Deshaun Watson to Play at High Level in 2023, Hints at Contract Restructure
The NFL Combine is the first step into the NFL off-season, the first real chance to talk to everyone around the league following the conclusion of the previous season. Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry took to the mic on Tuesday, discussing Deshaun Watson amongst various things.
"We are looking forward to continuing to evolve the offense over the next several months," said Berry. "Obviously him having a full offseason going into 2023, certainly expect him to play at a high level."
Watson will be expected to be far better than he was in 2022. The rust showed heavily in the six games he was able to start.
The NFL is always changing, it is a change with or get left behind kind of thing. Cleveland's offense is creative under head coach and play caller Kevin Stefanski, but it will have to continue to develop with their franchise quarterback.
When looking at the roster, the majority of the holes sit on defense. Though depth at wide receiver and the center position are question marks worth talking about. Cleveland doesn't currently have the cap space to go free agent shopping in a couple of weeks, but they have ways they can get there.
"When you do have an expensive QB on your roster you do have a different number of constraints when it comes to roster building," Berry stated.
One way is turning what Watson will make in 2023 into a signing bonus, then adding void years. Browns have been active with restructuring contracts in the past, a lot of the league is in on it too.
"It could be on the table but there's a lot of flexibility on what we can do."
