Browns to Release S John Johnson III at Start of League Year
The end has come for John Johnson III in a Cleveland Browns uniform. According to a report, the Browns plan to release the safety once the new league year starts March 15.
It was the dollar amount that didn't live up to the play. By cutting Johnson, the Browns save $9.75 million. There is $3.75 million in dead money during the 2023 season. Cleveland will place Johnson as a post June 1st cut, so they'll have to carry his salary until that point.
Johnson was a big signing by GM Andrew Berry a couple of years ago. He was scheduled to be a $13.5 million cap hit in 2023.
According to Pro Football Focus, Johnson graded out at 62 this past season, which is down from 68 last season. The former Los Angeles Ram made 79 tackles, a sack, and one interception.
Grant Delpit has one safety spot locked down, but the Browns will need to address the other one. The draft will be an option, as will free agency. Players like Juan Thornhill and Jessie Bates have been rumored. Now, Cleveland has another thing to work on this off-season.
