Cardinals Bring Back Kicker Matt Prater
PHOENIX -- After a first day of free agency that was fairly inactive, the Arizona Cardinals got to work today.
Yesterday saw OT Kelvin Beachum brought back on a two-year deal while losing DE Zach Allen to free agency.
After announcing the signing of former Philadelphia Eagles LB Kyzir White earlier today, the Cardinals officially announced the brought back Beachum, RB Corey Clement (one year) and K Matt Prater (two-year deal).
Prater (who will be 39-years-old by next season) entered the league in 2006 after going undrafted and signed with the Detroit Lions. He would make brief cameos with the Lions and Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons in 2007 before becoming the full-time kicker for the Denver Broncos in 2008.
Prater spent the next six seasons with Denver. He was released in early October of 2014 after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. A few days later, Prater returned to Detroit and spent the following seven seasons kicking for the Lions.
In 2021, he joined the Cardinals and played 30 games for the team over the last two years. He hit a career-high 37 field goal attempts in 2021 and converted 30 of them, one of which was a 62-yard field goal. He tallied 137 points that season, the second-most of his career.
Prater has two Pro Bowl nods and one All-Pro title to his name. He also holds the NFL record for most 50+ yard field goals with 70 and the most extra points in one season with 75.
