PFF Labels Zach Allen as Cardinals' Franchise Tag Candidate
The Arizona Cardinals have a few different free agents they may look to keep around at all costs.
Cornerback Byron Murphy proved he could hang with the best receivers in the league despite missing time in 2022. OT Kelvin Beachum played the most snaps out of any offensive player this past year. Other OL such as Justin Pugh may have desires from the organization to be brought back as well.
Yet out of the 30+ free agents the Cardinals will sort through, no name came on the scene quite as good as DE Zach Allen, who notched 5.5 sacks on the year and developed himself greatly over the course of the season.
Now, he's looking to be paid, and Pro Football Focus tabbed him as Arizona's franchise tag candidate, should they use it.
PFF Says Zach Allen is Cardinals' Franchise Tag Candidate
2022 Player WAR/Rank: 0.22 (8th)
"Allen had an impressive contract year on an otherwise shaky Cardinals defense, and while the franchise tag is likely too rich here, he’d be the guy if the Cardinals were considering placing it on anyone," said Brad Spielberger.
"Allen’s 35 quarterback pressures through Week 14 — before he was knocked out for the rest of the year with an injury — ranked top 15 among interior defenders, and his 11 tackles for loss or no gain were tied for fifth."
Defensive ends have the fourth-highest tag price for next season at $19.727 million.
