Former Cardinals LB Markus Golden Reportedly Signing With Steelers
Former Arizona Cardinals OLB Markus Golden is reportedly signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Golden was one of three starters from Arizona's front seven to leave this offseason, joining J.J. Watt (retirement) and Zach Allen (free agency). Since we are now in late May, Golden's signing won't impact the compensatory pick formula.
The Steelers were looking for a rotational pass rusher behind the likes of T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, and Golden could excel in a role that wouldn't ask him to produce significant numbers while giving Pittsburgh a veteran/experienced presence off the edge.
Mike Tomlin was reportedly at Golden's Pro Day when he was coming out of Mizzou.
Golden (31-years-old) entered the league as a second-round pick. He spent 2015-18 with the Cardinals before entering free agency and landing with the New York Giants in 2019.
After two years in New York, Golden returned to Arizona in 2020 after being traded for a sixth-round pick. He signed a one-year extension with Arizona last September.
Golden thus far has 316 total tackles, 47 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, 11 pass deflections, one interception and one touchdown.
It was clear both sides desired a split, as the Cardinals simply didn't get ideal production from Golden while the veteran edge player wanted a fresh start elsewhere.
Perhaps that can be in Pittsburgh playing alongside one of the best defensive players in the league and under one of the most respected head coaches.
