Obinna Eze
TCU
Horned Frogs

One-Liner:

Obinna Eze possesses a huge frame with excellent length at the position. He is a solid pass protector and has some good upside.

Pros:

A gigantic frame with ideal elite level arm length. Very long legs and short torso type of frame. Shows a good understanding of how to use his frame and length to his advantage in pass protection. Neutralizes pass rushers with his length and very good hand placement. He shows very good hand strength which allows him to sustain blocks. He maintains half man relationships and rarely over sets in pass pro. Displays a solid base and knee bend and has a consistent balance to him for his size. He doesn’t lunge and while also showing aggressiveness in pass protection. Frames up defenders and understands aiming points and what edge defenders are trying to do. Displays some bend to his game for a guy of his size. He handles power well off the edge. Better fit in a gap/power scheme and takes better angles in this concept.

Cons:

Poor footwork all around while pass protecting in his pass set and when run blocking in all concepts. He displays limited athleticism and explosiveness. Struggles zone blocking taking good angles, adequate leverage, and sustaining blocks in multiple run concepts. He will have mental lapses in pass protection when teams run twists and stunts. He struggles with speed off the edge. He doesn’t create much movement run blocking struggles to displace with his leverage and aiming points.

Summary:

Obinna Eze projects to be a developmental project at the next level that could turn into a solid backup. He wins with his size, length, and hand usage in pass protection. Eze lacks high end athleticism, shows poor footwork and struggles with speed off the edge. He doesn’t show much as a run blocker.

Background:

Obinna Eze first season of varsity football came as a senior in high school in 2016. He played junior varsity football as a junior due to being an exchange student. He is from Nigeria and came to America to originally play basketball. Played for head coach Jonathan Quinn at Davidson Academy. He was a consensus top 30 offensive tackle nationally. Originally played for Memphis and redshirted freshman year. In 2018, he played in 6 games all at left tackle totaling 67 snaps. In 2019 he started all 14 games at left tackle. He started all 11 games in 2020 for Memphis. Then he transferred to TCU and was the starting left tackle. From 2017 to 2020 he was apart of the AAC all academic team.
