Post-Weekend Training Camp Update with Injury Info
The New York Jets completed their second open training camp practice since returning home from the Hall of Fame Game, and now it's off to Carolina this week.
Before facing the Carolina Panthers in a preseason road game on Saturday, August 12, the Jets will participate in joint practices with Frank Reich's team on August 9 and 10. The Panthers hold their training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.
"You get to work against new schemes. You get to work against new verbiage. You get to work against different humans, obviously in a respectful way, but you go in there, you compete under a controlled environment," said Jets' head coach Robert Saleh.
On Sunday in Florham Park, quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense looked sharp. The four-time NFL MVP made notable connections to the tight end group, including a beauty to Tyler Conklin.
Sauce Gardner closed out practice with the play of the day, picking off Rodgers and taking it to the house.
The Jets are off on Monday before returning to practice on Tuesday, August 8.
Greg The Leg Perfect Again
After a 3-for-3 clip on field goals during the Hall of Fame Game, veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein didn't miss on Sunday. He made all eight of his attempts, including three from 50+ yards out.
“He’s definitely an asset,” said Saleh after Zuerlein hit from 54, 44 and 53 yards in the preseason opener.
Infirmary Report
Five Jets were working out on the side field as they deal with minor injuries WR Garrett Wilson, CB Bryce Hall, LB Chazz Surratt, QB Chris Streveler, LB Claudin Cherelus. Edge rusher Carl Lawson was a non-participant on Sunday due to his back being "a little tight."
Surratt and Streveler's problems stem from Thursday's Hall of Fame Game. The former, who made an interception in the preseason tilt, injured his hamstring. Meanwhile, the quarterback hurt his thumb.
"He’s just dealing with his thumb right now. At the end of the game, I think his hand hit the helmet of a defensive player and caused a little pain. Nothing broken, I don’t think," said Saleh on Sunday.
Hall tweaked his hamstring at some point during Saturday's practice according to the third-year head coach.
"He’s dealing with a minor hammy. Hoping to get him back soon. I don’t have a timeframe on him, but it’s not significant," said Saleh.
Meanwhile, Wilson, who suffered a low ankle sprain during practice on July 27, is close to returning.
RB Breece Hall and LT Duane Brown remain on Active/PUP, where they started training camp.
