Lions Cut Former Steelers RB
PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. has been released by the Detroit Lions as the team trims their roster from 90 to 53 before the regular season, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Snell signed with the team late into training camp after trying out for other clubs throughout the summer. He appeared to be the replacement for Justin Jackson, who announced his retirement, but will now look for a new home after being cut.
Snell was the Steelers' fourth-round draft pick in 2019 and played 63 games, including five starts for Pittsburgh. He rushed for 982 yards and seven touchdowns, and was the team's primary backup until 2022, when the team signed undrafted rookie Jaylen Warren.
As a vested veteran in the NFL, Snell will not need to clear waivers before signing with a new team. Therefore, he can find a new home with a club before they finalize their 53-man roster.
