Multiple Steelers Suffer Heat-Related Injuries
PITTSBURGH -- The heat got the best of the Pittsburgh Steelers during Day 2 of training camp at Saint Vincent College. With temperatures reaching the 90s and nearly 60% humidity on the field, several players dealt with heat-related injuries.
The Steelers took the field for a one-hour, 50-minute practice on Day 2. During their session, wide receivers Diontae Johnson and Calvin Austin, tight end Connor Heyward, defensive end DeMarvin Leal and running back Alfonzo Graham all went down with injuries.
Johnson was carted off the sideline for what head coach Mike Tomlin classified as a heat-related issue. He did not return to practice.
Austin ran a route on the sideline and stumbled to the ground holding his calf. Trainers immediately started tending to him on the sideline, stretching out a cramp. He eventually returned to the field.
Graham's calf also cramped, this time mid-run, and he hobbled to the sideline. He, too, was worked on by medical staff before returning to the sideline. Only a few minutes after, the Steelers blew the whistle to end practice.
As for Heyward, he came up limping after a route. Tomlin confirmed it was heat-related, but he appeared to be fine after practice as he walked the sideline to sign autographs and meet fans.
Leal returned to practice after going down with issues from the heat, according to Tomlin.
The Steelers will continue to deal with the heat in Latrobe. Over the weekend, temperatures are expected to remain in the 80s and could stay that high through next week.
Pittsburgh is scheduled for a day off on Monday.
