Former Steelers Coach Among Favorites for Chargers Job

The former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive assistant is a name to watch for the Chargers head coaching position.

PITTSBURGH -- Former defensive assistant Brian Flores didn't land a head coaching job like some expected after his sole season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But after a year in Minnesota as the Vikings defensive coordinator, it appears he's back in the running as one of the league's hottest names.

With the Los Angeles Chargers moving on from head coach Brandon Staley, the team is looking for a new and exciting option to replace him. At this point, there are plenty of big-name candidates that will be considered, but amongst them is the former Steelers coach.

Over at Sportsbetting.ag, Flores is amongst the favorites to land the Chargers job this offseason. Pittsburgh's former defensive assistant and linebackers coach is tied with Michigan's head coach, Jim Harbaugh, with 9/1 odds and is in the mix with a few highly-recognized names.

Currently, the favorites are New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick (3/1), Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith (4/1), Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore (4/1), Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson (7/1), Houston Texans OC Bobby Slowik (8/1), and Flores and Harbaugh.

Flores has helped lead a Vikings defense that is one of the best in the NFL this season. Through 14 weeks, Minnesota ranks 5th in points allowed and 10th in yards allowed, while fighting for a playoff spot at 7-6.

Flores's name will likely pop up with a number of open positions this offseason, possibly including the Patriots, if Belichick leaves. He'll be a name to watch as he looks to get back into a head coaching gig in 2024.
