Steelers RB Jaylen Warren Rips Najee Harris Haters
PITTSBURGH -- Jaylen Warren does not care about the Pittsburgh Steelers running back talk, and when it comes to being a backup to Najee Harris, he's 100% in - and believes in the plan.
Appearing on The Sick Podcast, Steelers Crazy, Warren discussed the backup dynamic and his role behind Harris. The noise this summer has been loud about him replacing Harris during the season, but he says people don't understand that the team needs Harris to win.
"No, it’s not at all [a competition]," Warren said. “Originally, I’m here to complement [Harris]; that’s the workhorse. That narrative people have talked to me about it. Honestly, it’s not like that at all. I don’t go in there daily thinking about it like, ‘Oh, I’m going to take his job.’ You know, everybody that’s a fan of the Steelers, the roster, the staff, we all know we need Najee to win. I don’t care about that. When it comes to that narrative, I block it out. There will be critics everywhere, but they will have opinions. But that’s what’s great about this team. We don’t let it get to us."
Harris was limited throughout the summer as the team looked to keep him fresh heading into Week 1. That sparked the narrative that Warren should become the Steelers' starter, but it appears he's comfortable working as a tandem.
Offensive coordinator Matt Canada made it clear heading into the season that there was no competition at running back, calling Harris their starter. Something Warren has known, and will continue to support, throughout the season.
