Steelers Predicted to Win Two Major Awards

The Pittsburgh Steelers have two front-runners for league awards.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are only concerned about winning a Super Bowl. If you ask anyone in the locker room, all personal accolades can be left at the door, and if winning a Lombardi means not winning an award, most on the roster would accept.

That being said, the optimism around the Steelers is high. So high that they're viewed around the league to have two members set for major recognition this season.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler spoke to a number of NFL scouts and executives to find out who those within the league believe will walk away with awards this season. And those results found that head coach Mike Tomlin and edge rusher T.J. Watt are viewed as the favorites for some hardware.

According to Fowler's piece, Watt is viewed as the front-runner to win Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career, and many "see the storm coming."

"There’s been a lot of hype around Nick Bosa and Micah Parsons and others and T.J. is going to remember that,” an AFC scout told Fowler. "I’m all-in on him having a huge year."

Watt missed seven games last season due to a torn pectoral but still managed to make a Pro Bowl. He tied the NFL's single-season sack record at 22.5 the year prior and took home his first DPOY award.

Pat McAfee has already promised Watt a large donation if the Steelers linebacker breaks the sack record this season. And if he does, it'll be tough to deny him his second award.

As for Tomlin, he's never won Coach of the Year, but his teams always seem to impress. This year, if they can reach the heights many are talking about, NFL executives believe he'll take him the honor.

"You know, as a baseline, Tomlin’s teams are always going to be pretty good, and if the quarterback can deliver, they have a chance to be really good," an NFC executive told Fowler."

The Steelers will keep their eyes on a return to the playoffs, but if they do pull off a run, it'll be hard to deny handing their players some extra trophies at the end of the season.
