Former Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster's Future With Patriots Uncertain

The former Pittsburgh Steelers wideout isn't sitting very high with the New England Patriots.

PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster signed a three-year, $25.5 million deal with the New England Patriots this offseason, seemingly stepping in as their top wideout for the near future.

That ship may have sailed, as the Patriots are reportedly considering moving away from Smith-Schuster after just one game, and believe his health is going to force him off the field.

"Patriots coaches have said all the right things about Smith-Schuster’s lack of playing time: he’s smart and works hard, he’s a good player and they feel positively about the two rookies who played over him," Boston Herald Andrew Callahan reported. "Multiple team sources believe Smith-Schuster is not presently among the team’s five most effective pass-catchers. According to those same sources, his place in the offense has been complicated by a variety of factors. Starts with health."

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, Smith-Schuster's knee is "a mess" and there are real concerns about when it will need attention again.

Smith-Schuster caught four passes for 33 yards in the Patriots season opener, but was off the field by the end of the game while New England turned to other wideouts.

Smith-Schuster did comment about his limited snap count, saying he was fine with the decision.

"No, not frustrated at all. I’ve been in this league way too long. When the time is called, the opportunity is called for me, I’ll make my play," Smith-Schuster said.

Where this saga goes from here is unknown, and there's a long season that could turn into a roller coaster ride for Smith-Schuster. Right now, though, things don't appear optimistic for his future in New England.
