Steelers DC Teryl Austin Named Candidate for Syracuse Job

The Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator could head back to the NCAA.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin is among a list of potential candidates to take over as the next head coach for Syracuse University.

Syracuse fired head coach Dino Babers after struggling to find success as the lead man for the Orange. Now, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Austin is within a list of 10 early candidates to be hired as Babers' replacement.

The list also includes Jason Candle, Bronco Mendenhall, Doug Marrone, Tony White, Al Golden, Curt Cignetti, Sean Lewis, Bob Chesney, and Liam Coen.

Austin has been with the Steelers since 2019, starting as a defensive backs coach before being named their defensive coordinator in 2022. The University of Pittsburgh alum spent 12 years in the NCAA, starting as a grad assistant for Penn State in 1991 and finishing with Michigan as a defensive assistant in 2002.

A replacement for Austin would be a mystery at this point. And if the Steelers choose to move on from offensive coordinator Matt Canada after the season, they could find themselves looking to replace both coordinators in the spring.
