Steelers Workout Former Punter
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking at other options at punter, working out former New York Giants, and Steelers, punter Brad Wing, according to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson.
Head coach Mike Tomlin mentioned Pressley Harvin's struggles during his Week 2 press conference, which likely led to them evaluating outside options. The third-year punter averaged 42.3 yards per punt in Week 1 against the 49ers, bringing his career average down to 43.5 yards per attempt.
He finished last season with 20 punts inside the 20-yard line and a career-high 44.5 yards per punt, which improved from 42.6 yards per punt his rookie season.
"I didn't think we did a good enough job of punting the football. I thought that was a component of it particularly early the field positioning component," Tomlin said. "[The 49ers] first two scores were on short fields you know, if you're not getting off the field on possession downs and your net punting isn'tgood, chances are your opponents are going to be on short fields, when they're on short fields it drives up the propensity to score, their analytical studies that outline that drive starts relative to scoring, we all understand that in this business. And so, I'd be remiss if I didn't talk about that component of the game was also a significant letdown for us."
Wing last played in 2017 for the Giants, spending three seasons with them before his release. He spent the 2014 season in Pittsburgh, averaging 43.7 yards per punt. Throughout his career, Wing averaged 44.7 yards per punt and has landed 100 punts inside the 20-yard line.
