Bracketology: College Baseball Tournament 1.0
FRISCO, Texas – College baseball fans often get left out of the fun of bracketology late in the season, so, seeing as there's a need, we here at allHogs.com put one together.
The least shocking item is that LSU is the No. 1 overall seed. The Tigers are a fearsome team with an elite No. 1 starter and a batting line-up that will scare pretty much any team the Tigers face.
On the other end of the spectrum, it was surprising how hard it was to find at-large teams to place into the brackets. There were a lot of teams with good records, but when diving deeper into how those wins were attained, it was stunning how little substance was truly there.
Even Tennessee, which began the process of sorting out regionals as a lock to get in found itself eliminated late because outside of a series win over Texas A&M, the Volunteers have no quality wins, much less a quality series win. Even Missouri easily blew through the Volunteers with a series sweep.
As for borderline teams in the ACC and the Big Ten, their non-conference schedules were typically laughable, engineered to puff up the win column in hopes of deceiving the committee when it comes time to make decisions.
The last team added to the field was Washington. The Huskies have a 20-11 record, which isn't all that impressive until you dig into how that came about.
The Huskies have a sweep of San Jose St., a series win over a UCLA team that has been in the Top 25 all season, and a split with No. 19 Arizona State, and a win over No. 21 Oregon State.
The lack of multiple elite West Coast teams this year made it difficult to determine where to place some of the lower seeds. Unfortunately, some of those teams are just going to have to travel.
Obviously, a lot of this will change over the final five weeks of the season, but for right now, it at least generates talking points, and baseball is a talking sport.
