Are the best three-point shooters taking the most shots?

MACON — The Cincinnati Bearcats are shooting just under 36% from three-point range this season. That's currently tied for the conference lead and 83rd in the country.

But take a look at the individual statistics, and things get concerning.

Senior guard Jeremiah Davenport leads the team with 134 three-point attempts. That's 14 more three-point attempts than any other player on the team.

We hear the phrase in basketball, "shooters keep shooting." That's great, but that only works when the shots eventually fall. In Davenport's case, they're not falling. He's only shooting 30 percent from three this season.

How is your team's leader in three-point shot attempts, only shooting 30 percent from three? It's worth noting that Davenport has increased his attempts per game since being relegated to the bench, but his overall scoring average has decreased.

Landers Nolley II is the best three-point shooter on the team at 44.3 percent.

He's a starter, but has attempted 12 fewer threes than Davenport. There have been games, including Arizona and Houston, where Nolley's three-point shooting kept UC in the game, and he's made four or more threes six times this season.

David DeJulius is shooting 38.6 percent from deep, but the key with him is he is more selective with his shots. Only nine times this season has he attempted five or more threes, and that shot selection contributes to his 44 percent shooting from the field.

Over the Bearcats' last six games, Nolley has attempted 38 threes and has made 18. DeJulius has attempted 23, with nine makes. Davenport has attempted 43 and has only made 14. Not to mention there are 0-of-7 and 0-of-5 outings included in that stretch.

The Bearcats are a good three-point shooting team. But they could be even better if their best shooters take the most threes. If not, Davenport could keep shooting the Bearcats out of big games.
