Georgia Tech Loses Series Finale To Clemson 14-5
Georgia Tech's offense could not be stopped yesterday, scoring 16 runs against Clemson. After struggling on offense the night before, the Yellow Jackets put forth a monster effort as they clinched the series against the Tigers.
Today they went for the sweep.
After solid performances from Dawson Brown and Luke Schmolke, Jackson Finley is going to get the start today, and here is how Georgia Tech will be lining up:
1. CF-Jake DeLeo
2. IF- Kristian Campbell
3. RF-Stephen Reid
4. 1B- Angelo Dispigna
5. Jackson Finley
6. 3B- Drew Compton
7. C- Jack Rubenstein
8. 2B- Nicholas Romano
9- SS Jadyn Jackson
The game could not have started out better for Finley. He struck out all three batters in the first and allowed the offense to get to work. Tech got a pair of walks from DeLeo and Dispigna, but no runs or hits came.
Clemson got on the board in the 2nd inning after a leadoff walk and single put runners on the corners. Finley limited the damage to just one run though and the Yellow Jackets had a chance to tie it up at the bottom of the inning.
The second and third inning went and neither team could get going behind the plate. It appeared that it would be another low-scoring affair, much like Friday night, but the Yellow Jackets pitching came unraveled as the game went on.
After a quick fourth inning, the Tigers started to stretch the lead in the 5th. A leadoff single gave them a base runner and then an RBI double from Blake Wright gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Cooper Ingle hit a 2-RBI double to make it 4-0 and then after another single, Finley was pulled. he got through 4.2 IP and gave up six hits, four earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts.
Cody Carwile came in to replace Finley after that. A wild pitch scored Ingle to make it 5-0 before the final out was recorded.
Romano started the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single and then got to second on a wild pitch. DeLeo walked to give GT a runner-in-scoring position. Reid came up with an RBI single, but it was the only run the Yellow Jackets' offense could muster.
The game was completely blown open in the top of the 6th.
A lead-off single from Benjamin Blackwell got the first runner on and then Wright blasted a two-run home run to give the Tigers a 7-1 lead. Carwile walked the next batter and then he advanced on a fielder's choice. GT had two outs and it looked like they might limit the damage after that, but that did not happen.
Carwile hit a batter to put another runner on and then his day was done and it was Josiah Siegel on the mound for Tech. Two straight RBI singles gave Clemson a 9-1 lead and then a three-run home run from Caden Grice made it 12-1 and the game was a wrap at that point. The Yellow Jackets gave up two more runs to make it 14-1.
To Georgia Tech's credit, they did not give up, and after they put in their young players, they did respond well. Parker Brosius and Brandon Prince got hits to get on base and a wild pitch got a run scored before a 2-RBI double from John Geisler cut the lead to 14-5.
That would be it though. Georgia Tech could not put together anything else and lost the final game of the series by nine runs.
Georgia Tech is now 16-8 and 5-4 in the ACC.
The Yellow Jackets will face Georgia State on Tuesday at Coolray Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
