Georgia Tech Handles Florida Tech in Non-Conference Matchup 79-56
After a slow start today, Georgia Tech was able to use a dominant second half to cruise past Florida Tech in a February non-conference matchup.
Georgia Tech (11-16) has been playing well recently and has now won two games in a row for the first time since winning back-to-back games against Northeastern and Georgia.
Lance Terry, Kyle Sturdivant, Deebo Coleman, Miles Kelly, and Ja'von Franklin were the starters for Georgia Tech today.
Florida Tech is a Division II school and most expected this to be a dominant performance for the Yellow Jackets from start to finish. That was not the case and five minutes in, the Panthers held an 11-10.
The teams would go back and forth for the next few minutes and then the Yellow Jackets were able to finally grab the lead away from Florida Tech. About halfway through the first half, the Panthers got the lead back 20-18, but a quick 6-0 run from the Yellow Jackets gave Georgia Tech a 24-20 lead.
At this point of the game, Georgia Tech was shooting 44%, but a big 16-7 rebounding edge for Florida Tech was keeping them in the game.
Florida Tech led 25-24 with 6:50 left in the first half when Georgia Tech went on their biggest run of the first half.
The Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 13-3 run and led 37-28 over Florida Tech at the half. Jalon Moore scored six of the 13 points in the run.
Here are the halftime stats.
The two teams would trade baskets at the start of the second half and Florida Tech only trailed by six, 45-39 with 16:43 left in the game. The Yellow Jackets wasted no time with a response and went on a quick 9-0 run to lead 54-39 and it felt like Georgia Tech was finally starting to pull away from the Panthers.
The game never really got close over the final 12 minutes. Georgia Tech maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and won 79-56. It was nice to cruise to a victory ahead of a big game on Tuesday on the road against Pitt.
Four Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were in double figures today. Terry led the way with 19 points on 7-15 shooting, Franklin had another double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, Moore had 15 points, and Kelly had 12 points.
The Yellow Jackets wound up winning the rebounding battle 37-34 and scored 23 points off of 16 Florida Tech turnovers. GT shot 35% on three-point shots compared to 17% from the Panthers. Georgia Tech outscored Florida Tech in the paint 40-30. They also outscored them on fastbreak points 16-3.
Georgia Tech will return to action with a trip to Pitt on Tuesday. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off on ACC Network.
