ESPN FPI Ranks Georgia Tech's Schedule As One Of The Nation's Toughest

Georgia Tech will once again play one of the nations toughest schedules in 2023

Georgia Tech is not unaccustomed to playing tough schedules and in 2023, they are going to be playing one of the nation's toughest schedules once again.

ESPN uses its FPI (Football Power Index) as an advanced analytical model to help look at matchups and predict outcomes. In ESPN's own words: "FPI is a predictive rating system designed to measure team strength and project performance going forward. The ultimate goal of FPI is not to rank teams 1 through 128; rather, it is to correctly predict games and season outcomes. If Vegas ever published the power rankings it uses to set its lines, they would likely look quite a lot like FPI."

Last year, it was near consensus that Georgia Tech would face the toughest schedule in the country. This year, FPI has Georgia Tech with the 22nd-hardest schedule in the country.

Given that the Yellow Jackets are going to be playing Georgia and Clemson every season for the foreseeable future and those programs are among the country's best. On top of those teams, Georgia Tech will face potential top 50 teams like Ole Miss (who has the toughest projected schedule according to FPI), North Carolina, Miami, Syracuse, Louisville, and Wake Forest.

Seven of Georgia Tech's 12 opponents made bowl games last season, with Georgia winning the national championship and Clemson the ACC.

This is the first year in the ACC with no divisions and the first year of the new 3-5-5 scheduling model. Georgia Tech's permanent opponents in this new model are Clemon, Wake Forest, and Louisville.

Georgia Tech's projected win total in Vegas for the 2023 season is currently at 4.5 (according to Caesars Sportsbook). Part of that low projection is the tough schedule. It will be up to Brent Key and this Yellow Jackets team to prove everyone wrong and make a bowl game and have a winning season for the first time since 2018.
