Howland emerged as Indiana's starting running back late in the 2023 season. He finished the year as the Hoosiers' leading rushing, totaling 76 carries, 354 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 22 yards.

That was a big step up in production for Howland, who ran the ball just eight times in his first two years with the team. At 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, Howland brought a physical running style to Indiana. And despite a crowded backfield with Josh Henderson, Jaylin Lucas and Christian Turner, Howland was tops in total yards and yards per carry.

Howland's most productive stretch of the season came in back-to-back games against Illinois and Michigan State, when he combined for 32 carries, 149 yards and two touchdowns.

Howland committed to Indiana out of Joliet West High School in Illinois as a three-star recruit and the 59th-ranked athlete in the nation.
