CINCINNATI — Former Reds pitcher Sonny Gray signed a three-year, $75 million deal with the Cardinals on Monday.

Plenty of fans were hoping Gray would return to Cincinnati after spending three seasons here and it nearly happened according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

"The Reds were pursuing Sonny Gray and were close before he went to the Cardinals on a reported 3-year, $75 million deal," Sheldon tweeted.

The fact that the Reds "were close" is a clear indicator that they're hoping to bolster their rotation this offseason and might be willing to spend significant money in free agency to do it.
