Pelicans Earn First Summer League Win
New Orleans, LA - The New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Golden State Warriors 94-86 to earn their first 2023 NBA Summer League victory. Coach Casey Hill vowed the team would improve from Friday's mistakes.
New Orleans opened the game prioritizing protecting the basketball after committing 30 turnovers on Friday. The Pelicans only committed two fouls trailing 22-21 at the end of the first quarter.
Dyson Daniels and Jordan Hawkins scored four points during the opening period. The New Orleans team successfully made all seven free throw attempts in the first quarter. Despite having 14 more free throw attempts in the first half, the Golden State team maintained a lead of 51-44.
New Orleans used a tenacious defense and potent offense, outscoring the Warriors 50-36 in the second half. Dereon Seabron led the Pels in scoring with 25 points on 8/11 from the field.
New Orleans shot 18% from three-point range, while Golden State shot 44% from beyond the arc.
Dyson Daniels had another impressive performance, coming close to a triple-double with 17 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists. He's playing very aggressively in the Summer League, and it's paying dividends. E.J. Liddell, still on a minutes restriction, scored 8 points and pulled down three rebounds.
Lester Quinones led the Warriors with 18 points.
The Pelicans look to start a winning streak when they take on the Phoenix Suns Tuesday evening in Las Vegas.
