Postgame Observations: Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase Lead Bengals Past Cardinals 34-20

Cincinnati improves to 2-3 on the season following Sunday's win.
In this story:

GLENDALE, ARIZ — The Bengals beat the Cardinals 34-20 on Sunday at State Farm Stadium.

Joe Burrow called the game a "must-win" and he played like it, completing 36-of-46 passes for 317 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Burrow completed his first 10 passes, got into a rhythm early and led the Bengals to their second win of the season.

The Bengals improve to 2-3 on the season. This is the first time they've won in Arizona. Here are our postgame observations:

Record Breaker

Ja'Marr Chase finished Sunday's game with 15 receptions (19 targets) for 192 yards and three touchdowns. His 14 receptions are a new Bengals record. Carl Pickens previously held the record, hauling in 13 receptions against the Steelers on Oct. 11, 1998.

Joe to Ja'Marr

Burrow found Chase for a 63-yard touchdown on the opening possession of the third quarter. It was a beautiful play action pass and perfect throw by Burrow. Chase caught it in stride and coasted into the end zone to give the Bengals a 24-14 lead.

It was the Bengals' longest play of the season and propelled Cincinnati to their first road win of the season.

Fast Start

The Bengals hadn't scored touchdown in the first half touchdown in their first four games this season. That quickly changed on Sunday.

After forcing Arizona to go 3-and-out on their opening drive, Joe Burrow led Cincinnati on an 11-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Marr Chase.

Burrow took a few steps to his right to give himself some extra time before finding Chase open in the end zone.

The Bengals' defense forced a second 3-and-out and Trenton Irwin's 28-yard punt return gave Cincinnati the ball at the Arizona 48-yard line.

The Bengals drove downfield and nearly scored a second touchdown, but they were forced to setting for a 40-yard field goal by Evan McPherson.

Burrow started the game 11-of-12 for 95 yards and one touchdown.

Big Play

Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt intercepted Josh Dobbs late in the first half and returned it for an 11-yard touchdown. That gave Cincinnati a 17-14 lead and gave the Bengals some momentum after the Cardinals stopped them on 3rd and 4th-and-goal from the one-yard line.

The Bengals defense also forced two more turnovers in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.

Cincinnati was +2 in the turnover battle on Sunday.

AFC North

With the win, the Bengals are just one game behind the Steelers (3-2) and Ravens (3-2) in the AFC North standings.

Sunday's game was a must-win and it also helped Cincinnati get within striking distance of their division rivals.

Up Next

The Bengals play the Seahawks on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Paycor Stadium at 1 p.m. ET. It's their last game before the Week 7 bye.
