Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson went through his first normal offseason with the team and is heading into training camp with no lingering suspension on his shoulders. With that being said, Watson is expected to be more comfortable in the offense in 2023.

The work has seemingly been put in. Watson has gotten the guys together for a couple of offseason workouts and his leadership has shown. Head coach Kevin Stefanski is the first to admit that.

“I was walking through the locker room a couple of days ago before quarterbacks reported, he’s (Watson’s) sitting at his locker room looking at plays. I’m like ‘What are you doing here?’,” Stefanski said.

Last year was bumpy for Watson in his six-game acclimation back to getting on the field again. He showed some flashes of his pre-2020 play but overall the product was pretty bad. With that being said, the playbook is going to continue to be honed in on making Watson the best player he can be. It’s the way to go for the wanted success of the team.

“When we design everything, it’s always making sure it fits Deshaun’s eyes,” Stefanski explained. “Maybe it’s a concept he’s done over the years. Maybe it’s a concept we both saw that we’re going to try it out."

Watson uses his legs more than a quarterback that Stefanski has coached previously, which is an adjustment for the offensive line, too.

“When the quarterback likes to play I like to play. We’ve talked about this before, there’s so much football, so much scheme. When a quarterback is comfortable with a play, he typically makes it work.”

A comfortable quarterback is important for any offense at any level. If they don’t have confidence behind the center, it’s a recipe for disaster. Last season, the six games started their process of working on that on the field. Sure, plenty of practice reps were had. But there is nothing that beats the live-action reps.

“I don’t know if you’re worth your salt if you’re not taking your quarterback’s input with what you’re putting together.”
