Former Browns RB Peyton Hillis Details “Scariest Point” of his Near Death Experience
Peyton Hillis is remembered by many for his breakout 2010 season with the Cleveland Browns when he rumbled for nearly 1,200 yards, but perhaps he should be more remembered for what took place on Jan. 4th.
Hillis was a hero in saving the lives of two children — including his son 9-year-old son — who was drowning at a beach the family was at.
Hillis opened up about the heroic event that nearly killed John on Good Morning America and detailed the “scariest point” of the whole thing.
"I think the scariest point ... was when I'm swimming to my son and I have to pass by him because my niece is in more danger," Hillis said. "I knew that I had to pass him up to get to Camille first. Because, you know, if I didn't then there's no way she would've made it."
As a parent, that feeling had to be nearly unbearable. But in the end, Hillis made the right move and was able to save both his son and his niece. When Hillis returned which the second child, his son, he fell unconscious and began to suffer from lung and kidney failure.
Hillis spent two weeks in the hospital, approximately 10 of those days he was unconscious and on a ventilator.
“It is 100 percent a miracle that someone didn’t die,” added Hillis.
The Arkansas product spent seven seasons in the NFL and two with the Browns. He ended his playing career after the 2014 season.
