Seahawks 90-Man Countdown: K Jason Myers - All-Pro Incoming?

After eclipsing a 90 percent accuracy rate on field goals for the second time in three seasons, the Seattle Seahawks paid Jason Myers handsomely as a top-three kicker, and now he will have to earn that money by bucking an odd-year trend.
In this story:

With the calendar flipping to June and offseason activities wrapping up league-wide, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC in less than two months, officially ushering in the 2023 season.

To celebrate the new incoming season, we'll be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, exploring best and worst case scenarios and what to expect from each player entering the 2023 campaign.

Jason Myers, Kicker

Height/Weight: 5-10, 190 pounds

2022 Stats: 34 for 37 on field goals, 46 for 47 on extra points

Entering a contract year in the aftermath of one of his worst seasons in the NFL, Myers rebounded beautifully to re-emerge as one of the league's premier kickers. After making less than 75 percent of his field goals in 2021, his fortunes dramatically changed splitting the uprights nearly 92 percent of the time last season, including connecting on all six of his attempts of 50 yards or longer. Notorious for missing extra points earlier in his career, he was near automatic in that department as well, missing only once on 47 attempts during the regular season. He earned a selection to the first-ever NFLPA All-Pro squad and made his second Pro Bowl team.

As a reward for his kicking brilliance, the Seahawks wasted little time extending Myers, as the two sides agreed to a four-year, $21.1 million deal in mid-January. The 32-year old currently stands as the third highest paid kicker in the league behind only Ravens star Justin Tucker and Colts standout Matt Gay.

Best-Case Scenario: Bucking previous trends of struggling during odd-numbered years, Myers again eclipses the 90 percent threshold for field goal conversion rate and only misses a pair of extra points, earning Second-Team All-Pro honors and helping catapult the Seahawks to an NFC West title with late game heroics in Week 18.

Worst-Case Scenario: With regression to the mean being a normal phenomenon for kickers, Myers' overall performance takes a hit after signing his new deal with him missing two crucial kicks at the end of regulation that could have won games for Seattle and he finishes with a subpar 77 percent conversion rate in a down season.

What to Expect in 2023: When it comes to consistency year-to-year, no position may be more erratic and volatile than kicker, which is evidenced looking at Myers career as a whole. In eight NFL seasons, he has never posted back-to-back years with at least an 85 percent field goal conversion rate and only once has had a three-year span without a season dipping below 80 percent.

Based on his track record, including making only 17 out of 23 attempts for a dismal 73.9 percent rate in 2021, history would suggest Myers will take a step back from his outstanding numbers a year ago. But even if he isn't quite as effective as he was in 2022, the Seahawks will be counting on him to be money in clutch situations and continue to get the job done from long distance, making him a weapon on special teams that can help put points on the board even if the offense can't drive deep into opposing territory.
