Wes Miller Confirms Cincinnati is Redshirting Rayvon Griffith This Season

The highly-rated 2023 recruit has too much competition ahead of him to burn a year of eligibility.
In this story:

CINCINNATI — The Bearcats are not playing freshman forward Rayvon Griffith this season as head coach Wes Miller confirmed on his 700 WLW radio show that they are redshirting the freshman.

Miller has been clear throughout the past few months that Griffith has too much competition ahead of him to see the floor right away.

Fellow freshman Jizzle James had just one other true point guard ahead of him entering the season and it's allowed him to play 18.7 minutes per game thus far.

"There were just some things that he was behind on," Miller said about redshirting Griffith. "They were so obvious in the summer, in the fall, and it wasn't anything that he can't overcome. It's just hard to do in a short period of time, when he has older players in position that are just a little farther ahead with some of the fundamental things, but I'll tell you what, guys, he's going to be terrific. And I think years down the road, having an extra year will be a blessing. I thought it was the right thing to do for him. I hope it's the right thing to do for Cincinnati, because I hope he stays here that long. But regardless, I think it's the right thing to do for him and that should come first."

Griffith can now focus on developing in practice and adding strength in the Monster Factory before vying for a rotation spot in 2024.

Miller's full answer is available at the end of the show.
