The Cincinnati Reds aren’t trying to trade Jonathan India according to Nick Krall. The Reds President of Baseball Operations did reveal the plan for the former National League Rookie of the Year.

It has been widely rumored since the beginning of the offseason that the Reds were discussing India trade possibilities. Krall set the record straight on that during a chat with reporters.

"We’re not looking to move him. He has a chance to be a very big contributor on our club next year," Krall said. "I told him that. We’re not looking to trade anybody. Do people get asked about? Sure. Does that happen periodically? Sure. But at the same time, we are not looking to just move him. That’s been out there multiple times."

Krall is usually guarded about specific when it comes to trades or free agent signings, but he was quite specific here. The many rumors of teams asking about India will remain just that. It would seem no discussions ever passed the initial phase of an opposing general manager calling Krall to see if he’s available.

Interestingly enough, Krall did provide a glimpse into the plan for India next year.

"If Christian is out of the lineup and Steer is in left field, maybe [India] can play some first," Krall said. "I think there’s going to be some mix and match. … So you’ve got four guys on your team that can play first base, that if somebody is out of the lineup or you want to give a guy a day off or push a guy to the DH spot.”

This would be another avenue to get India into the lineup. Believe it or not, India has never played another position in his major league career, other than second base and designated hitter. Some, including myself, have speculated if India could become a super utility type player in order to get him at-bats. That would be a departure from what he is used to. We will see India grow this upcoming season.

The Reds have incredible depth on the infield with India remaining on the team. That depth grew when they signed Jeimer Candelario to a three-year, $45 million contract

How David Bell utilizes that depth will be a constant storyline to follow throughout 2024.
