Jake Browning on Joe Burrow's Confidence in Him: 'Nice to Get Some Validation'

Cincinnati is rolling out a fresh quarterback this coming weekend.

CINCINNATI — The new Bengals starting quarterback revealed some of his recent discussions with the old one as Jake Browning gets ready to fully take over fromm Joe Burrow.

The latter isn't lacking confidence in his replacement.

"I think he's never had anything but confidence in me from kind of the day I stepped in here and threw a little bit with them," Browning said. "I think he called me Jakey spin rate. I think him or Brandon Allen called me that and so I was like all right, it always feels a little good. Like I had just gotten cut from Minnesota. I basically thought I was gonna go become a coach and stepped into the room and I remember after the Minnesota game to him saying like, 'I really appreciate, what you're saying on the sideline, like just keep talking to me.' And I was like, 'Okay, I can do that.'

"And just as my career has gone on here, just having a ton of confidence in my ability, and I've always had that too, but it's nice to get some validation there and I think other than that, it's just been normal conversation. You know, 'When are you getting surgery,' stuff like that. And kind of normal human interaction."

Browning spoke with an air of confidence over the extended media session as he faces a major opportunity that he recognizes, but isn't paralyzing over.

He can firmly cement his role as the Bengals' go-to backup option under Burrow for years to come, or even get a chance elsewhere this offseason after Cincinnati extends a qualifying offer to the exclusive rights free agent.

"I've had to earn everything," Browning said. "I've had to battle and here I am so let's go."
