Best Prediction on What the Browns do With Their First Pick
The 2023 NFL Draft is just about here and unfortunately, Cleveland Browns fans will have to wait at least a day until the team makes their first selection. Browns are set to pick in the third round on Friday at pick No. 74.
Let’s get to the important part, what are the Browns going to do with that 74th kick after having no first or second-round picks? Cleveland very well could trade that pick and move back a few spots, depending on how the board falls. Cleveland has the chance to add picks in 2024 when they lack selections. If the Browns are certain a guy they want on their board will be there perhaps 10 picks later, a trade-down could happen.
If you talk about the trade-down, you have to talk about the trade-up. Don’t be surprised if the Browns see a guy falling and go and grab him. I look at this option as less likely to happen than trading down.
What I want the Browns to do:
Go out and select wide receiver Marvin Mims out of Oklahoma. Mims produced over three seasons as a member of the Sooners, including 1,083 receiving last season. Over three seasons of play, Mims had scored 20 touchdowns at Oklahoma.
There will be a day when Amari Cooper’s price tag gets too high for the Browns and they will want to save money elsewhere. Adding wide receivers is a good thing, even with Mims under the six-foot tall listing.
Mims wins down the field and it showed with 19.5 yards per reception in college. Mims gets the ball in his hands, he can be dangerous.
The knock on Mims for me is that he did not get asked to run a ton of routes in college. Mims route tree is a bit limited on tape, but that’s not to say he’s not capable. Cleveland’s wide receiver room gets a lot better if this pick happens.
What the Browns should do:
Cleveland’s defensive interior has been historically bad over the last two seasons and they went out in free agency and hoped to have made some major repairs. The work isn’t done there yet and GM Andrew Berry should be doubling down to ensure that the position is at the best it can be in 2023.
Insert Gervon Dexter Sr., a standout defensive tackle from Florida, that the Browns would be smart to pick if he is on the board at 74. Dexter producers from the get-go in SEC. At 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds, Dexter combines it with good athleticism that allows him to be a problem in the middle.
Consistency is the key for Dexter, who has shown the ability to be dominant, then has disappeared at other times. One-on-one, Dexter is someone many guards do not want to see. When he is playing with a high motor, that does not always happen.
If he puts the work in, Dexter has the ability to be a starter in the NFL for a long time.
The safe pick the Browns could go with:
Andrew Berry recently mentioned that the team would be adding more talent on the edge. Perhaps the team adds two players, at least one of those is going to come from the draft.
Isaiah McGuire produced over the three seasons that he played in the SEC at Missouri. He had 17.5 sacks over his three seasons that he played to go along with 32 tackles for a loss. McGuire is a very good run defender, that is his selling cars. It also makes a ton of sense to pair him with Myles Garrett and Ogbonnia Okonkoro for that reason.
Good size at 6-foot-4 and 268 pounds, McGuire plays with a motor you want on defense and he looks the part.
This is a safe pick to me that I could see the Browns going with at No. 74. It fills a depth need with the upside as a feature starter.
