Winning Offseason? PFF Raves About the Browns Moves

Cleveland Browns are beginning to get national attention for their work put in this offseason.
In this story:

In the AFC, if you did not improve this offseason you do not have a chance in coming out of it at the end of the season. The Cleveland Browns were one team that underwent big changes this offseason and national media outlets are beginning to give them their flowers.

"They’ve had a great offseason as well, capped off recently with the trade for Za’Darius Smith,” said PFF’s Brad Spielberger on a recent PFF live stream that had good things to say about the Browns.

The move of Ogbonnia Okoronkwo was another one that was highlighted. When Okoronkwo was signed it looked like the Browns were primed to start him, now with the signing of Smith they can rotate him in and allow him to be as productive as possible.

It was pointed out that the Browns overhauled the defensive line outside of Myles Garrett, it was a point of emphasis. An under-the-radar move was the hiring of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who is going to want to unleash this defensive line.

According to Speilberger, his favorite move was the trade for WR Elijah Moore from the New York Jets. Moore and a third-round pick were sent to Cleveland for their second-round pick. Well, the Browns doubled up at the receiver position and took Tennessee WR Cedric Tillman with that third-round pick.

“He can win down the field, he has speed, I think he just gives you a different skill set.”

Cleveland added Juan Thornhill and Rodney McLeod to the safety room but their point of emphasis was not the back end of the defense. It was pointed out the Browns feel good about their secondary with a better defensive line, which should lean true.

The letter grade “A” was given to the Browns for their off-season work.

“On paper, I’m in love with this team, they just have to show up and do it,” said Spielberger.

At the end of the day, the game of football actually has to be played on the field. The offseason awards mean nothing besides a pat on the back for the GM who made the moves. Now, if Cleveland wants to get over the jump and make a playoff run, they’ll have to put these moves to work on the field.
