Cincinnati Reds Sign Outfielder Conner Capel to Minor League Deal

Reds add speculative outfield depth

The Cincinnati Reds have added some outfield depth. They signed outfielder Conner Capel to a minor league contract on Tuesday. It includes an invite to Spring Training.

Capel has seen major league playing time with the St Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics over the last two seasons. He played nine games for the Cardinals in 2022 before being claimed off waivers by the Athletics.

He was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of high school. That was the same draft the Guardians selected Will Benson in the first round. He was traded by the Guardians to the Cardinals in 2018 as part of the deal that sent Oscar Mercado to Cleveland.

In his brief MLB playing time, Capel has shown to be a league average hitter, albeit with little power. He has a .280 batting average in 125 career at-bats with a .408 slugging percentage.

Capel showed a decent ability to draw walks in the minors and that was true in his short tenure with the A’s last year. In 32 games he walked 14% of the time. The league average is 8.6%. In truth, everything MLB-wise with Capel is looking at too small of a sample size to know much of anything. He will get his shot to prove himself in spring training.
