Top MLB Analyst Says Reds One Piece Away From Being Division Favorites in '24
CINCINNATI — Former Reds general manager and current MLB analyst and insider Jim Bowden loves what the Reds have done so far this offseason.
They added experience and versatility to their team. First, they signed right-handed relief pitcher Emilio Pagan. They followed that up by signing right-hander Nick Martinez. The veteran can start games or come out of the bullpen next season.
Then, they added a powerful bat in Jeimer Candelario. He has the ability to play both first and third base.
"The Reds have committed $87 million this offseason in free agency on 1B Jeimer Candelario, RHP Nick Martinez, and RHP Emilio Pagan," Bowden tweeted. "They are just one SP away from me making them favorites in the NL Central for 2024. Let's Go!"
There's no denying that the Reds are off to a great start. Manager David Bell has a much more versatile roster. The pieces fit together.
Yes, even Candelario. Some are questioning the decision to sign him, but adding a guy that could 25-30 home runs next season and brings defensive versatility is a no-brainer, especially for a young team like the Reds.
There's plenty of time to add a starting pitcher. Shane Bieber ($12.2 million) or Dylan Cease ($8.8 million) are likely trade targets due to their talent and their projected salaries in 2024.
