CINCINNATI — The Blue Jays have expressed some interest in Joey Votto according to Ben Nicolson-Smith of Sportsnet

Votto is a free agent for the first time in his career after spending 17 seasons with the Reds. Toronto is in the market for a designated hitter and while nothing seems imminent, Votto is on their list of potential targets.

"There’s some depth to the DH market, which may allow the Blue Jays to wait," Nicolson-Smith wrote. "Sure, they could rush to get something done today, and they have some degree of interest in Rhys Hoskins, J.D. Martinez, Joc Pederson, Justin Turner and Joey Votto, among various others, but they may be able to wait on that front, knowing that someone talented will be available in four or five weeks, perhaps at a lower price."

Votto certainly fits the description of a veteran that could still be available in late January. He's also from Toronto and is eager to prove he has something left, despite being 40 years old and dealing with injuries in recent seasons.

Votto appeared in 2,056 games for the Reds, finishing with 2,135 hits, 1,365 walks, 356 home runs and 1,144 RBI. He posted a .294 batting average and a .920 OPS.

The Reds declined his $20 million club option for 2024 and bought out the final year of his deal for $7 million.
