Browns Make Decision on LT Jedrick Wills Jr. Fifth-Year Option

The decision is in on the Cleveland Browns left tackle.

It seemed to be heading this way but the Cleveland Browns have decided to pick up the fifth-year option on Jedrick Wills Jr.’s contract. Wills is now guaranteed a salary of nearly $14.2 million in 2024, a good chunk of change for the former No. 10 overall pick. This news was first reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Wills is scheduled to have a cap hit of $6.2 million this coming season in Cleveland. Despite inconsistent play from the former Alabama right tackle turned Cleveland left tackle, the Browns are giving him a fifth-year.

The $14.2 million would currently not be in the top 15 of the highest-paid left tackles in the NFL. Contracts aren’t getting cheaper for tackles so this choice probably wasn’t all that hard for Cleveland. After all, Wills has shown in the past he’s capable of being that guy long-term. It has been the consistency that’s been the issue.

Over the past three seasons, Wills has started 45 games for the Browns, including all 17 last season. Wills was not healthy in 2017 by any means but fought through the nagging injuries. In 2020 he dealt with an alleged injury that can be disastrous for tackles.

Cleveland is hoping for Wills’ best year to come this season that is approaching, in return, it could lead to a new contract ahead of him before playing on his option. But if all else fails, Wills will be in a Cleveland Browns uniform through at least the 2024 season.
