Latest Update on Potential Shane Bieber Trade: 'I Don't Know That It's Going to Happen'
CINCINNATI — The Reds are hoping to add a starting pitcher this offseason. Shane Bieber might be near the top of their list.
Cleveland is open to trading the 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner, but they may hold onto Bieber according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
"Yes, the Guardians are considering moving Shane Bieber," Rosenthal said on the Foul Territory podcast. "I don't know that it's going to happen. And the reason is that Bieber has lost velocity since 2020, really almost every year. He's not quite the same guy. He's coming off of an injury.
"As one executive put it to me, 'I'm not sure anyone is going to be interested in Shane Bieber at the price that the Guardians would likely would request.'"
Bieber posted a 3.80 ERA in 21 starts last season. It was his worst ERA since his rookie campaign in 2018 (4.55). His best season was in 2020 when he finished with a 1.63 ERA, 122 strikeouts and won the Cy Young Award.
Despite the trade rumors, he could start the season in Cleveland.
"I'm not sure if they will trade him this offseason, when they could keep him and hope that he kinda gets back to more of who he was and then they could move him at the deadline," Rosenthal added.
