Joe Burrow Expands on Entering 'Aggressive Mode' During Games

Cincinnati needed it from him this past Sunday, but it led to some costly turnovers.

CINCINNATI — Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is in a "feel out" process for when he needs to be conservative against being aggressive like in the Bengals comeback try against the Texans.

He had a pair of interceptions when that switch flipped, but it also resulted in Cincinnati's two biggest plays of the game.

"It’s something you’ve got to feel out," Burrow said this week. "In the second half, I entered aggressive mode and tried to make quite a bit of plays. Then I made a couple of decisions that I probably wouldn’t have made had the situation not been what it was. Some mistakes you’d like to have back. In the same sentence, you try to be aggressive knowing their offense is playing really well and their defense is playing well. You’re trying to make plays. I wouldn’t say I’m upset about any of the decisions that I made. Obviously, you’d like to have a couple back. But for the most part, I need to get better in that situation at turning the switch on and off. Being aggressive in spots and knowing when to take the foot off the pedal."

Cincinnati could need that mode throughout Thursday's game as they try to overcome rough injuries and rough history on the road in a primetime matchup against Baltimore.

"It depends on the situation," Burrow said about when he enters a more aggressive play style. "I tried early in my career making a lot of those plays. You try to pick your spots to make those. There were spots I had to on Sunday. A lot of times you don’t. A lot of times you can play in the structure of the offense and move the ball well and take advantage of what the defense is giving you. Then sometimes the defense is playing well and you have to flip that switch, go into aggressive mode and try to make some plays. That was one of those days."

Cincinnati can still control its fate for the AFC North, which may have opened up a bit more with Deshaun Watson missing the rest of the season in Cleveland.
