Cleveland Browns broke the quietness that has settled over after OTAs wrapped up last month. Cleveland made a roster move by signing cornerback Thakarius Keyes to a one-year contract. The news was first reported by Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland Dot Com.

Keyes (6-foot-1 202 pounds) spent last season on the practice squad of the AFC North’s Baltimore Ravens. Prior to that, Keyes played in a combined five games in 2021 with the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts. Keyes was a seventh-round draft selection in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. During his rookie season, Keyes played in eight games and made one start.

So far in his brief NFL career, the Tulane product has been primarily a special teams player, though he did get some run with the Chiefs’ defense in 2020. While at Tulane, Keyes was a starter during his junior and senior seasons. He finished his collegiate career with 95 tackles and two interceptions.

In a corresponding move, the Browns waived offensive linemen Dawson Deaton with an injury designation. Deaton was a seventh round pick of the Browns in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Signing with the Browns, Keyes will have a chance to show the team he can contribute as a practice squad player. Or perhaps it’s an audition for the rest of the league, as Cleveland’s cornerback room is set.
