CINCINNATI — Don’t look now, but the Cincinnati Reds have already added two key pieces in their quest to return to the postseason in 2024.

In a 13-hour span, they bolstered their pitching staff with two proven, reliable veterans in Emilio Pagan and Nick Martinez.

Two moves that give everyone an indicator of general manager Nick Krall’s vision for the 2024 campaign.

It’s a heck of a start by the Reds, but it has to continue. Adding a right handed bat in the outfield and another true starter would be ideal.

They may view Martinez as a starting pitcher. His two-year, $26 million contract would indicate that they plan to have him to the rotation. He’s made 19 starts over the past two seasons. His presence could take some pressure off of them when considering the top of the market starters that could be available, including Tyler Glasgow. He’s set to make $25 million and hasn’t been durable throughout his career.

Guardians ace Shane Bieber would be a perfect fit. His mentality, attitude and approach all fit what the Reds are hoping to build from a culture standpoint—both on and off the field. He’s also set to make $12.2 million this season.

A rotation of Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo. Graham Ashcraft, Martinez and Bieber would be dangerous. It would also give them the depth necessary to withstand an injury or two to their rotation.

If no one gets hurt or if Martinez is better suited for a long-relief role, then they could still lean on Bieber, who would project to be the ace of their staff, even if he’s coming off of a down year.

The Reds have money to spend. They’ll also have a strong farm system and multiple prospects that will pique the Guardians’ interest.

Making a strong push for Bieber would alleviate any rotation concerns and should make Cincinnati’s starting staff one of the best in the National League. White Sox ace Dylan Cease could have a similar impact.

Reds fans deserve a winner. The organization is clearly taking steps forward. More moves need to be made, but they’re trending in the right direction, which is exactly what everyone was hoping they would do after a surprising and exciting 2023 season.

If it continues, there are going to be plenty of smiling faces at Great American Ballpark this summer.
